The 1887 Legacy Society is a donor recognition program designed to honor alumni and friends who have designated a planned gift (art, bequests, property and/or gifts of insurance). Induction into the Society is based on written confirmation of the gift via The 1887 Legacy Gift Form. Alumni/friends who make provisions in their wills for the University without notification will be inducted into the Society posthumous and their family recognized.
Established in 2007, 64 alumni have been inducted into the 1887 Legacy Society, contributing over $6 million in planned gifts. They are inducted during the Foundation’s annual “a Night for Philanthropy” black tie, an elegant gala keynoted by celebrities/individuals representing the arts, civic organizations, government, etc. The first induction ceremony was held April 2007 at the Schuster Center for Performing Arts. Actress/Singer Della Reese was the keynote speaker. Other past speakers have included Actress Taraji Henson, Author Maggie Anderson, New York Life Corporate Vice President for Civic Responsibility Eugene Mitchell, Urban School Principal Larry Ballew, and University of San Francisco Anthropology Professor Dr. Patricia Walton.
During the planned 1887 Legacy Society receptions with alumni, the presentations will answer the following questions:
- How to establish your legacy with the Alma Mater?
- Why one should create a will and how to establish a bequest?
- Why one should have proper life insurance?
- Who do you contact to obtain information about the 1887 Legacy Society?
- Why should one understand Medicare, its many components and associated advantage plans?
Understanding Medicare is easier said than done. Its various components, Medicare parts A, B, C, and D, can be very confusing and overwhelming due to the many options. Without adequate information regarding advantage plans designed to cover 20% of medical cost, most people will incur relatively high out-of-pocket costs for their health care.
